In a speech that focused largely on civil liberties, Senator Rand Paul (R-Kent.) addressed a standing room only audience at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday. Paul hammered on familiar themes concerning Fourth Amendment protections and the primacy of the Constitution and individual above government power. Paul’s speech was one of the best attended of the conference, as he challenged an energetic young crowd, “Next generation of liberty lovers, will you stand and be heard?”
One of the loudest applause lines came when the Kentucky Senator said, “We will not trade our liberty for security, not now, not ever” and targeted the National Security Agency’s controversial metadata collection program by saying, “What you do on your cell phone is none of their damn business.”
The overreaching authority of the federal government undermining individual liberty was brought to popular attention last year when Paul conducted a 13-hour filibuster over President Obama’s appointment of John Brennan as head of the Central Intelligence Agency. Paul said Friday, “The 4th amendment is equally as important as the 2nd amendment and conservatives cannot forget this.”
Paul advised that an executive branch “unrestrained by becomes nothing short of tyranny.”
